Mountain Agrarian Systems Program (SAM)
VASI-IRD-IRRI
Product ID: SAMCD

The Mountain Agrarian Systems Program (SAM) started in 1998 with the main objectives of improving (i) agricultural productivity (ii) natural resources management and (iii) living standards of highlinds ethnic minority groups. The SAM Program is made of two sub-programs. Based on a preliminary agronomic factors, the "Cropping Systems" component (VASI-CIRAD) identifies, adapts, tests and extends improved cropping systems from field to small watershed levels. The "Regional" component (VASI-IRD-IRRI) aims at achieving a good understanding of the processes of land use changes and their main driving forces from farm to provincial levels prior to the introduction of technical and organizational innovations. It is complementary to the "Cropping Systems" component as it indentifies extrapolation keys to large geographic areas of locally obtained research results, and offers new tools to facilitate decision making in the field of rural development and sustainable natural resource management in the uplands. This CD-ROM aims at delivering the main results and achievements of the first phase of the SAM Program (1998-2002).

RiceIPM - CD ROM
developed jointly by IRRI and the Centre for Pest Information Technology & Transfer (CPITT) at the University of Queensland
Product ID: 9781864995701

Version 2 is under development and will be available in 2006.

RiceIPM is an interactive training and resource package for researchers, advisors and students. Focusing on tropical rice, this CD provides a comprehensive source of information and training material for improving the management of rice pests, including insect pests, diseases and weeds.

A major feature of this interactive knowledge management tool is that users can navigate through the content in any way they want to meet their own, specific information and learning needs. The combination of video, images, hypertext links and interactive keys provides a unique way of accessing the wealth of material contained on the CD. For instance –

  • A diagnostic key assists users to short list the likely causes of observed rice disorders
  • A series of interactive, multi-media Lucid keys provide help to users in identifying insects found in rice
  • A customized search engine provides a rapid means of directing the user to specific topics to be found on the CD.
  • The CD provides links to web sites that provide further information on specific topics.

The content of the CD - structured according to the competency standards required for proficient integrated pest management - has been researched and developed by an international team of IPM specialists from various countries in SE Asia and from the International Rice Research Institute, based in the Philippines.

RiceIPM contains sections on pest ecology; crop checking; fact sheets on major insect pests, rats, diseases, weeds, nutrient deficiency and toxicity; crop growth and pest damage; pest management options and decision-making and economics.

A separate section of the CD provides material for researchers and advisers on various aspects of implementing IPM, including Farmer Field Schools, Multi-media campaigns, and stakeholder workshops. Other components include frequently asked questions, a multiple-choice quiz, a "slide-tape" tutorial on biological control, and an information sources section, including references, rice statistics, and a glossary.

A team at The University of Queensland in Australia has developed the innovative software used in RiceIPM, including the interactive Lucid key system.

RiceIPM will be an essential tool for all those involved in research, teaching and giving advice on integrated pest management in tropical rice.

Version 1.0 had been developed to illustrate IT capabilities in information delivery and may serve as a means to encourage IPM scientists and implementers to add and improve the product. We look forward to producing Version 2 with new components, information, images, videos and fact sheets.
