  Successful Water-Wise Rice Production Workshop

In 2002, the "Water Workgroup of the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium" and the "Water-less Rice" project led by the Plant Research International of Wageningen University and Research Centre (the Netherlands) co-organized the "Water-Wise Rice Production" workshop. The workshop addressed the problem of water shortage in rice production in Asia, and was hosted by the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, April 8-11. Other projects and consortia present were "Growing more rice with less water "Ground Cover Rice Production System"

and the "Rice-Wheat Consortium". Besides scientists, a number of irrigation engineers and managers participated as well. In total, there were some 75 participants from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Germany, Japan, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States of America. There were 30 oral presentations and 9 poster presentations, organized in a number of thematic sessions ranging from field-level water-saving technologies to irrigation system optimization issues. The field-level technologies included recent developments such as alternate wetting and drying, the system of rice intensification (SRI) and aerobic rice. After the workshop, the various projects and consortia had 2-day meetings on project planning and workplan development. The proceedings of the workshop will be published as a book in late 2002 or early 2003.
