 ORYZA2000: a simulation model for lowland rice

 

 

 

 

ORYZA2000: modeling lowland rice is the successor to a series of (lowland) rice growth simulation models developed by IRRI and Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) in the early to mid-1990s in the project "Simulation and Systems Analysis for Rice Production (SARP)." It is an update and integration of the models ORYZA1 for potential production, ORYZA_W for water-limited situations, and ORYZA-N for nitrogen-limited production. Since the release of these models, new insights into crop growth and water-balance processes have been gained, new scientific subroutines developed, and programming standards and tools improved. The making of the water-smart rice farmer in the Philippines: The TTWS Project

The Technology Transfer for Water Savings (TTWS) Project in the Philippines is part of the Water Workgroup of the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium. The project develops and implements a framework for transfer, adaptation and adoption of knowledge on water-saving technologies. It was started in 2001 with a participatory knowledge transfer and development approach in which scientists, irrigation engineers, extension agents, and farmers work closely together in 3 pilot sites in Central Luzon known as "lighthouses". These lighthouses serve as center for technology adaptation and diffusion. In the dry season of 2001-2002, the lighthouses successfully implemented 22 demonstration-cum-research fields (completely farmer managed, with guidance from the project team) on controlled irrigation. At each site, popular training seminars were organized and three farmer field schools (each attracting about 150-200 farmers) for the diffusion of the technology. Extension materials developed include popular brochures and posters on controlled irrigation and simple water monitoring tools. The project is executed by the National Irrigation Administration, the Philippine Rice Research Institute, IRRI, local deepwell irrigation associations, and rice farmers in the 3 pilot sites.

  Successful Water-Wise Rice Production Workshop

In 2002, the "Water Workgroup of the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium" and the "Water-less Rice" project led by the Plant Research International of Wageningen University and Research Centre (the Netherlands) co-organized the "Water-Wise Rice Production" workshop. The workshop addressed the problem of water shortage in rice production in Asia, and was hosted by the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, April 8-11. For more information, click here.
