Goal and objectives

The Water Workgroup is part of the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium. The objective of the workgroup is to facilitate the exchange of information and the development and spread of promising technologies to cope with water scarcity in irrigated rice production. Specific objectives are to:

Obtain insights in current water-saving practices by farmers and identify their behavior in coping with water scarcity.

Inventory water-saving technologies and identify the most promising ones.

Promote the spread and exchange of information on sustainable water-saving technologies that increase the productivity and value of water, optimize farmers' objectives and maintain the water resource base.

Exchange information on water-saving technologies.

Methodology

Small workshops and exchange visits to inventory and exchange information on the development of water-saving technologies, to discuss protocols and guidelines, and to cross-compare results between sites.

Inventory of the adoption of water-saving technologies by farmers (if any) and their general behavior and objectives in water-scarce areas.

Support will be provided to assist i) experimentation on water-saving technologies, and ii) pilot studies to adapt and introduce promising technologies in on-farm participatory approaches.

Integration of farmers, extension services and irrigation managers in the development and introduction of water-saving technologies.
