Germplasm requests

If you want to obtain seed from IRRI, first review our distribution policy. Then

Check the appropriate Material Transfer Agreement:

In most cases this is the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) developed by the Governing Body of the International Treaty on PGRFA. You should carefully examine the SMTA template. It is a document agreed by negotiation between many governments. It defines what you are allowed to do with the rice you receive, and what you are not allowed to do, and what obligations you take on (personally or institutionally) when you receive rice from us. For further information, please consult our guidance notes on the SMTA.

After verifying that you can, tell us that you accept the terms and conditions of the SMTA. (If you are requesting rice on behalf of an organization, make sure that the organization accepts the SMTA)

The SMTA allows us to send germplasm only for the purposes of research, breeding and training for food and agriculture. So you will need to tell us what is your purpose.

Note that you do not need to complete or send the SMTA. We will complete the SMTA for you in due course.

Obtain an import Permit

If your country requires one, obtain an import permit from your national quarantine authorities and send it to us. We will not send rice without an import permit to a country that requires one.

Choose appropriate germplasm

Choose what you want as precisely as possible.
