How do I complete the SMTA?

Don't! We do it!

We have developed a system to create each SMTA automatically. Even if you do create an SMTA as part of a request to us, we'll have to create another one in order to register it properly in our system.

If you wish, we can even create an SMTA for you to send rice to IRRI. So you don't need to bother with the details. However, in case you want to know, here are the details:

  • We do not, and indeed we must not, change even one word of the SMTA except as specified below.
  • We add an ID to identify the particular SMTA. It's not required by the Treaty, but we need it for our records
  • In article 1.2 of the SMTA we insert your name and address as recipient
  • In article 10 we insert the required text for the chosen method of indicating agreement to the SMTA - normally the "shrink-wrap SMTA", but at your request we can change that to the text for a signed SMTA
  • In annex 1 we give a URL that shows you all available passport and descriptive data for every sample in the shipment
  • In annex 1 we give up to three lists of germplasm
    • The list of samples in the shipment (if any) other than PGRFA under development
    • The list of samples in the shipment (if any) that are PGRFA under development
    • Samples that are ancestors of at least one of the PGRFA and that are available or that have been received or distributed under the MLS
